Brief History
The Nordic Hydrographic Commission (NHC) was formally established in Stockholm, Sweden on 18 March 1929, at a meeting of the Hydrographers of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The creation of the NHC had already been proposed at a meeting in 1926. The first Chairman of the NHC was Commander Gustaf Reinius (Sweden). Iceland joined the Commission in 1956. The first activities included discussions on the standardization of chart symbols, water level information on charts, copyright of nautical publications, implementation of the recommendations of IHB Conferences, and reducing the costs of the IHB without reducing its efficiency. The main achievements have been changing opinions, providing information, harmonizing Nordic practices with regard to various hydrographic related issues and jointly contributing to the IHO work.

Bref historique
La commission hydrographique nordique (CHN) fut officiellement établie à Stockholm, Suède, le 18 mars 1929, au cours d´une réunion des hydrographes du Danemark, de la Finlande, de la Norvège et de la Suède. La création de la CHN avait déjà été proposée lors d´une réunion en 1926. Le premier président de la CHN fut le capitaine de frégate Gustaf REINIUS (Suède). L´Islande a rejoint la Commission en 1956. La première étape consista en des discussions sur la normalisation des symboles cartographiques, sur les informations relatives au niveau de la mer portées sur les cartes, sur le droit d´auteur des publications nautiques, sur la mise en œuvre des recommandations des Conférences du BHI, et sur la réduction des coûts du BHI sans réduction de son efficacité. Les premiers accomplissements portaient sur l´évolution des points de vue, sur la fourniture d´informations, sur l´harmonisation des pratiques nordiques eu égard aux diverses questions liées à l´hydrographie et sur la contribution conjointe aux travaux de l´OHI.
