Brief History
The idea to set up the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (EAtHC) was initiated by Portugal and agreed by the Hydrographers of France, Portugal and Spain during the 12th International Hydrographic Conference (20-30 April 1982). A preliminary meeting was held in Lisboa, Portugal, on 5 and 6 December 1983, with representatives from France, Nigeria, Portugal, Spain,Cape Verde and the IHB, to draft the statutes of the Commission. The Commission was formally established on 26 November 1984 once the statutes had been signed by all four IHO Member States in the Region (France, Nigeria, Portugal and Spain). The first EAtHC Conference took place in Paris, France, on 15 to 17 April 1986. From the start, the Commission strived to encourage the participation of the many non IHO Member States in the Region. Main achievements are: monitoring and improving the status of nautical information, surveys, and charting, developing and implementing INT chart and ENC schemes, raising the awareness of the importance of hydrography in the Region and promoting capacity building.

Bref historique
L’idée d’établir la Commission hydrographique de l’Atlantique oriental fut proposée par le Portugal et fit l’objet d’un accord des directeurs des Services hydrographiques d’Espagne, de France et du Portugal lors de la 12ème Conférence hydrographique internationale (20-30 avril 1982). Une réunion préliminaire fut organisée à Lisbonne, Portugal, les 5 et 6 décembre 1983, avec des représentants de l’Espagne, de la France, du Nigéria, du Portugal,du Cap-Vert et du BHI, pour rédiger les statuts de la Commission. La Commission fut créée formellement le 26 novembre 1984 une fois les statuts signés par les quatre Etats membres de l’OHI de la région (Espagne, France, Nigéria et Portugal). La première conférence de la CHAtO se tint à Paris, France, du 15 au 17 avril 1986. Dès le début, la Commission s’efforça d’encourager la participation des nombreux Etats de la région non membres de l’OHI. Les principales réalisations sont : le pilotage et l’amélioration de l’état de l’information nautique, des levés et de la cartographie, l’élaboration et la réalisation des schémas de cartes INT et ENC, la sensibilisation à l’importance de l’hydrographie dans la région et la promotion du développement des capacités.
